Well of course you are, and these facts are fantastic things to teach your children ahead of a well deserved trip overseas so that they can enter a new country knowing as much as they possibly can and take a whole lot more from the experience! Well here for you today is another list of great facts about India that will leave you richly educated and looking forward to your trip with a brain busting full of knowledge!

  • India is located in the southern part of Asia and lies between the countries of Pakistan, Nepal and China. On it’s northern border it has the highest mountain chain anywhere on planet earth with the Himalayas creating a daunting sight for anyone who ever travels there to see them.
  • The capital city of India is New Delhi, although this is sometimes referred to simply as ‘Delhi’. Other large cities in the country which also present as important tourist destinations include Mumbai (which was formerly known as Bombay), Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and Delhi itself.
  • New Delhi was the site of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which brought all the nations of the Commonwealth to India for 10 days of sporting celebrations. This was the largest sporting event ever held in India.
  • The national sport of India is cricket and it is a sport loved by the entire population. India has become very successful in the sport and recently won the 2011 World Cup of Cricket.
  • India is a huge country, and is officially the seventh largest country in the entire world.
  • India is one of only two countries in the entire world to have a population over 1 billion. China is the other and does have a larger population, but experts predict that India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world over the next few decades.
  • The main products produced by India have to do with the agricultural industries as the country is largely an agricultural nation. It does also do some exporting and business in the iron and steel industry and also produces a wide variety of other goods to export all around the world.
  • India has several seas around it, with such seas as the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal located on parts of India.
  • The population of New Delhi is approximately 13 million people, making it one of the largest populations for any city in the entire world.
  • There are 17 major languages in India although in total there are 844 dialects spoken.
  • There are two main religions in India with Hinduism accounting for 80% of the nation’s religion while Muslim accounts for around 10% of the religion of India. The remaining 10% is made up of other religions such as Christianity, Buddhists and Sikhs.
  • The climate of India can vary across the entire country, with temperate climates in the north and monsoonal tropical conditions in the south. There are parts of the country, such is in the Himalayas in the north where snow capped peaks are common, although India is also very well known for it’s extremely hot climate in many parts of the country.
  • India is well known for its tigers, with the endangered species now protected in most parts of the country. This doesn’t unfortunately stop poachers and hunters who still try and kill tigers all around India.

You can never have too many facts in your head when you travel to a new country so with these facts now firmly implanted into your brain we hope you can travel to India now knowing a little bit more about the country you are visiting and hope you will come home with a further knowledge of this beautiful and unique country!
