HIV & Aids in South Africa

It is a very sad fact, but South Africa is known as the country with the highest rate of HIV and Aids in the entire world. For the last 30 years the country has had this reputation tarnished on it and has long tried to shake this image off.

In 2009, it was estimated that a whopping 5.6 million people in the country had Aids and HIV and it was a long way ahead of any other country. In the same year, it is believed that out of these 5.6 million people with Aids and HIV that 310,000 of them died due to the disease.

It is strongly apparent in younger age groups, with people in the 15-49 groups most susceptible to the diseases. The disease is transferred during unsafe sexual intercourse or through blood, and has a high rate amongst children as well as their parents pass on the disease to their kids in conception. With all these damning statistics, the South African government has been implementing numerous strategies in order to curb the spread of the disease throughout the country.
