The Vibrant Culture of Singapore

Within the shores of its small islands, is a culturally diverse population exceeding five million.  Added to this dense group are eleven million tourists that grace the nation yearly.  All join in celebrating each other’s ethnic and religious festivals throughout the year.  This is the Lion City known as Singapore.

The majority of Singaporeans can trace their ancestral line back to China, Malaysia, India or Yemen.  In fact, Singapore has switched owners from locals to British, Japanese and Malaysia before establishing sovereignty.  This amazing mix did not just affect population diversity.  You will find Buddhist, Christian, Islam, Taoist and Hindu places of worship all over the nation.  Some have even con-joined!  No single religion is overly predominant.

Singaporeans with Chinese descent are the majority of the resident population but other groups are well represented.  English is the choice of language when communicating cross-culturally.  Areas of the nation can be linked to certain ethnic groups.  Don’t forget expats, holiday makers and tourists.  With record turnouts, you can expect to meet a constant flow of visitors as part of the city.

Also, Singapore observes an amazing array of festivals.  Visitors participate  as the nation celebrates New Year (Western), Mid Autumn Festival (Chinese), Diwali (Hindu), Ramadan (Islam), Vesak Day (Buddhist), and Christmas (Christian) to name a few.  The Lunar New Year gala is quite the spectacle!

Unfortunately, this article can only gloss over the deep culture of Singapore. There are aspects that can only be explained through experiencing.  So, it is left for travellers to immerse themselves in the lively busyness of Singapore’s culture.
