Religions followed in India

India is a land of people belonging to different religions which has been a very important part of Indian culture. People of different origins and cultures reside in each and every part of India. Hinduism shares the majority of the share in terms of the main religion of India. Other religions that also follow the league are Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam.

Hinduism: is the oldest religion as compared to other ones. The majority of people in India are Hindus. This is the most ancient religion and the first one too to exist in India. Hindus worship hundreds of Gods and Goddesses. However they believe in the presence of one Supreme God.  They view other Gods and Goddesses as a part of the Supreme deity.

Sikhism: The religion Sikhism is followed in North India, mainly in Punjab. The followers of Sikhism are referred to as Sikhs. They follow the teachings of ten Gurus among which Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first and most followed Guru in the Sikh History (leader). Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the Holy Scripture that Sikhs follows and adheres to. It

Jainism: followers of Jainism are referred to as Jains. They form a very small yet important part of India.

Buddhism: this religion is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, popularly known as Lord Buddha. Followers of Buddhism are referred to as Buddhists.

Christianity: this religion in India is the third largest. It is dominant mainly in South India and North Eastern part of India. Though no one knows who brought Christianity in India, however it is believed that Thomas the Apostle introduced this religion.

Islam: Islam is the second most followed religion in India. Followers of Islam are referred to as Muslims. Indian history believes that followers of Islam forcefully used to convert Hindus to Muslims, as they believed their religion being alone supreme and truthful.
