Travelling with children in India can be enjoyable but it can present
many dangers. These range from health, food, money and transport and
activities.
Health and health hazards
India presents many health hazards. Common diseases which are prevalent in India are Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, Typhus, Hepatitis A and B. It is advisable to have your children vaccinated against Measles, Mumps and Rabies.
If the region you plan to visit has had a recent outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis or the plague, it is best to avoid this area. One of the main causes of mortality among young children is malaria. Prevention is important. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your child is not bitten by using long-sleeved clothes and bed net s after dark. An important preventive measure is to make use of mosquito repellent.
However, ensure that you consult with your paediatrician or family doctor prior to using any such repellents, especially for children under 2 years old. It may take some time for your child to adapt to new surroundings. Your child may find it difficult to sleep away from home initially. It may take more time for their “body clocks” to adjust.
Ensure your children have plenty of rest and sleep when they arrive in India.
Toddlers have a habit of picking things up off the ground and putting it into their mouths. It is important to ensure your kids wash their hands frequently. It may also be advisable to carry some antibiotic hand wash with you to keep your hands clean. Children are naturally very active and dehydration can be a serious problem. It is important to ensure a ready supply of bottled water.
Some simple tips that may work for you:
- Drink bottled water
- Use suntan Lotion (factors 30 and 15 (and sometimes 60))
- Keep your hands clean and use antiseptic soap.
- Wash your hands before eating
- Keep nails short.
- Always put on hats and sunglasses.
- Wear long sleeves
- Wear strong shoes and no sandals. Check feet on cuts after temple visits and disinfect if necessary.
- Disinfect and clean any cut or scratch as soon as possible
- Eat in busy restaurants and avoid food on stalls
- Buy a small anklet with a bell and make your kid wear it. You will be able to hear him around even when you’re not watching.
- Use mosquito repellent
- If possible, carry your own medicine and tablets
Food
Food can be challenging if you are not prepared. Indian cuisine can be spicier and hotter than similar Indian food sold in supermarkets or shops. Simple foods such as Indian bread (all kinds), eggs, plain rice, fresh fruit, toast, curd are available in most places. Remember the quick tips mentioned above and keep to busy restaurants and popular food outlets. It is always a good idea to have some crackers or biscuits with you for the occasional snack.
Road hazards
Indian roads are busy and extremely dangerous. Drivers do not always care too much about anything walking on the sides. There is no way you can let go of your kids once you are in the streets. Thus it is important to ensure that you keep a watchful eye on your kids every time.
Another problem is air-pollution; a car with air-conditioning is absolutely necessary to keep most of the dirty air out. Also, be aware of your surroundings and of people. Though people may be friendly, it is always important to have a healthy dose of scepticism.
Safety standards can be an issue. Always double check rooms, windows
and balconies carefully and make sure there are no loose bolts and screws or live electrical wires. Kids can easily harm themselves by playing with such things.
Money and transport
Travelling in India is cheap, but travelling with the kids certainly will make it a bit more costly. It is important to make adequate provision for expenses in respect of transport and accommodation, especially if you want cleaner and more spacious accommodation for children. It is also recommended to bring enough clothes and shoes for your child to wear. Bring your own diapers as Indian ones are not so good. Travelling in India can be one of the most enjoyable experience of your life and can be the source of wonderful memories for your child. However, if you keep in mind the tips mentioned above, you will be able to ensure a safe trip as well.
