Nature and Singapore

Whilst Singapore holds much high rise buildings and infrastructures, it is also home for abundant wildlife. Near centre of the main island alone are nature reserves Bukit Timah and the Central Catchment spreading over three thousand hectares.  These are just one of the areas that have been preserved as the tropical forest which Singapore once was.

Trekking through Singapore’s nature reserve may present you a close encounter with monkeys. So close in fact, that you are advised to protect your snacks!  Other areas are home to many avian species such as the Oriental magpie-robin and Blue-crowned hanging parrot. Each area is unique and has its own parks and attractions to entice anyone.  These can include war relics, tourist centres, and amazing scenery.

But you don’t have to go looking in a nature reserve to find green. From its early independence, Singapore has undertaken a project to incorporate nature with its city. The efforts of the past now give Singapore its distinct appearance. Common walkways are bordered with plants and trees. Parks attract birds as well as people. Gardens are constantly being improved with plantation of many different flowers varieties.

Overall, many of Singapore trees and animal species are native to tropical conditions. Both in streets and in parks, Singapore’s flora and fauna are displayed.

So if you have never visited Singapore before and are wondering what the city nation looks like, the answer could be “green”.
